Icewings

Contained in a cloud of biting hoarfrost, these risen bats fly on wings of flaking leather and icicle bones. They seek the warmth of the living as they once sought blood, but still like to bite. Each tiny mouth is stuffed full of crimson shards formed from the flash-frozen blood of their victims. Each chomp breaks some fangs but forges others anew. To be in their presence is to feel the biting chill of death. -The Breathless Bestiary Icewings Medium undead (Swarm), unaligned Armor Class 12 Hit Points 18 (4d8) Speed 0 ft Fly 30 ft Str 3 Dex 15 Con 10 Int 2 Wis 12 Cha 4 Damage Vulnerabilities fire Damage Resistances bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing from nonmagical attacks Damage Immunities cold Condition Immunities charmed, frightened, grappled, paralyzed, petrified, prone, restrained, stunned Senses darkvision 60 ft, passive Perception 11 Languages - Challe...

Hagbeetle

The size of a horse and covered in offal-brown chitin specked with green, the hagbeetle’s insectoid face lays hidden under a wide, armored plate. Said plate looks like a crone’s face, stretched horrifically wide complete with a crooked nose of a horn and beady eyes – which are actually the bug’s. Its antennae and the sensory hair around it form a grey, scraggly mane. The ‘face’ parts, revealing sharp mandibles whenever the hagbeetle bites its prey or hisses. That bone-jarring sound reminds one of the raspy, ravenous breathing of a hag. Guardian. While the hagbeetle is a hungry and hateful thing, it bounds to the cult it is gifted to as a hag does to its coven sisters. This is easy to explain, as the hagbeetles are cultivated by hags loyal to the waning court within the feywild. Occasionally, one is brought to the mortal plain to assist a waning cult. Raised from a young age by the cultists it becomes fiercely protective of them. Every other living thing, however, is fair game for i...

Alluvium War Slime

Now a slime in the shape of a wolf an alluvium looks like it should fall apart at any moment. Beneath translucent skin a few connecting strands of grey muscle amid sea glass colored bones flex and twitch whenever the thing moves. Bloodshot eyes are held in place by piercing bone spurs with a thin film of ooze over them to keep from drying out. Intestines writhe below the organs like an agitated jellyfish. The rest of the semi-solid gel where meat once was resembles murky water. Patches of cilia sprout from the surface on the creature’s shoulders and sides, drinking in strange sensory data. Its maw is a hole filled with broken bones in place of fangs. Buzz-Ard

Mutated by prolonged exposure to the Demon Winds, the buzz-ard was once a carrion eater but now a vicious bird of prey. Its throat is encircled by bone spurns instead of feathers. With a wingspan as wide as man, the bird is covered in black feathers with a congealed blood sheen. It is these feathers that prove the most dangerous. Swopping and spinning through its prey, the buzz-ard cuts meals to ribbons before feasting on them. When a foe proves too tough, it coats the creature in vile vomit to even the odds. King Under Amber Emanation

While the sire of the Waning Princes remained trapped in blood-honey amber deep in the feywild, from time to time a wisp of this archfey’s dark will slips free. Carried on the wings of direflies the emanation finds purchase in the flesh and marrow of a Waning Cult in the material world. There it grows along with the direfly hive until not only the cult, but an entire town is consumed. The resulting swarm of glowing, murmuring, devouring insects roils across the kingdom. Wherever the crimson lit cloud settles, death and madness follows as like locusts to grain, the direflies devour souls and the swarm grows. To be bitten by even a single direfly is to risk becoming a fresh hive as grubs grow rapidly in your bones. The emanation calls to the autumnal fey of the Waning Court and the mortal madmen who worship them. The foul host frolics in its wake, laying waste to settlements leagues away from the central mass. Yet, they are not immune to all-consuming chaos. It was after all, the Wa...

Wispy Crocodile

This long, ferocious reptile bears rigged, crackling scales across its ethereal blue body. Clearly a crocodile, the undead beast reminds one of a will-o-wisp, if one lives long enough after encountering its jaws. Not only do its fangs crush flesh and bone, they lance the prey with electric jolts generated within the wispy crocodile's unliving, ever-hungry core. Lightning on the Water. Once the Fiend of the Moors realized he could raise and resulpt the varied beasts of his domain, the elven horror sought out the largest crocodiles in the bog. Capturing them, though, proved difficult as the ancient reptiles recognized a greater predator and fled whenever the accursed ranger came near. So, the Fiend of The Moors employed will-o-wisps to entrance his targets before slaying them. However, he found when imbuing the crocodiles with unlife, that they came back resembling those vile balls of light. This pleased the bastard even more. Whispy Crocodile Large beas...

Fen Toad

Corpulent and putrid, the fen toad was massive in life only to swell up with brackish water, pus, and noisome glass. Its eye, in turn, shriveled to nothing leaving sockets empty save for pin pricks of witch light not unlike will-o-wisps in hue. A purple, sore-covered tongue hands from chapped lips. Deathless Glutton. The first fen toad swallowed the Fiend of the Moors , its poor amphibian brain thought the accursed elf was carrion instead of an undead terror. Instead of carving his way out, the fiend settled in the giant frog's gut and devoured its life force from within. In short order, the creature died. Not long after that, it returned to unlife under the Fiend of the Moor’s control and opened its mouth with all the ease of an inn door. The doomed ranger stepped out and sent the first fen toad out to infect and raise its kin. Fen Toad Large undead, unaligned Armor Class 10 Hit Points 45 (6d10 + 12) ...

Slough Snake

The pallid wyrm measures in excess of ten, ragged feet; its scales translucent and the meat beneath nigh-insubstantial. Whether gliding in water, over land, or through solid objects, the serpent is practically silent. Not completely silent, however, as a subtle wheeze comes from the undead snake, though the sound is not ophidian in nature. Instead, it reminds one of the last gasps of a dying man. Clutch of the Grave. The great constrictors of the mire were the first creatures the Fiend of the Moors. were drawn to after his damnation. They were also the first lives he consumed to fuel his undead state. A ranger in life, however, the Fiend learned how to keep enough of the serpents’ souls intact so he might raise them as deathless companions. Like their creature, the slough snakes crave the heat of the living, coiling around their victims, and squeezing until that delicate flame is extinguished. Slough Snake Huge undead, unaligned Arm...

Swarm of Bilge Barnacles

Scuttering along one spindly legs, these crustaceans are covered with a white shells covered in a series of spherical clusters and spines. The middle of its shell contains a mandibled mouth ringed by tiny eyes, while the underside of its ‘head’ envelopes a leech-like mouth. Once they latch onto a creature, the shells slice up the flesh while the legs dig in deep. The clusters make it hard to dislodge the creatures, even more so as they convert a victim’s bones into additional shell. Bloodborne Parasite. These foul beasts began as normal barnacles along a boat hull as the vessel sailed, and then sank in a noisome swamp. Instead of shriveling up and dying, these crustaceans adapted to survive. FIrst they latched onto lesser undead and drained their juices before being discovered by the Fiend of the Moors. The cursed ranger proceeded to breed and refine the profane creatures, gifting them with a thirst for blood only outdone by actual vampires. Like the other corrupted beasts in the ...

Death's Head

“The Gutters Slasher.” “Full Moon Killer.” “The Buzzing Horror of Lankkirk.” “Dr. Bones.” What do these four infamous killers have in common? They are all the same creature, or rather collection of creatures. Each beetle of this unique hive is crested with what appears to be a tiny, human skull of off-white with scarlet wings under a darker red carapace. Though, this sentient swarm isn’t spotted in its natural state often, and those that see it usually don’t live to tell the tale. Most of the time, the swarm nests within a humanoid corpse, which it animates. The insects take great care to keep their walking hive clothed while breeding and feeding in the rotten flesh. It’s not long, however, before skin sloughs away, revealing bloody honeycombs strapped in place with cloth or leather. The corpse’s eyes are always eaten first, with two fat, skull-headed grubs taking their place. Sometimes Deaths’ Head claims it came to be by feeding on the body of a lich, mummy, or vampire of som...

Sirocco Steed

The sirocco steed is a long-necked equine the color of desert sands. A pair of scythe-like horns sprouts from its brow and curve back toward its tangled mane. These natural weapons are normally used against predators or when potential suitors battle one another during mating season. Older sirocco steeds are covered in scars they've gathered over the years. However, the beasts are usually placid and avoid confrontation when they can. Sirocco steeds have a natural ability to create sand spouts to confuse predators as they escape. Laxadon

Slow and steady, the laxadon is a massive mammal covered in shaggy, brown hair that bears claws that are threateningly large even for its size. Thankfully, the laxadon is a herbivore. It uses its claws to remove a tree's bark and reduce the rest down to easy-to-chew strips. Female laxadons have small tusks coming out of the sides of their mouths. On the other hand, males of species sport bright plumage-like fur down their spines. During mating season they puff out feathers to entice the process. Hunters leave laxadon alone for the most part, their fur is too coarse and meat a bit too fatty. Likewise, predators, humanoid or otherwise, are often overcome with lethargy which puts them on an even level with the clawed beasts. Russet Currentrunner

Lake-boat sailors often share tales of this massive, underwater predator. When deep in their cups, they describe it as a mountain lion but covered in dull, copper scales instead of fur. Thin tendrils take the place of its whiskers, and serrated gills provided a fair imitation of fur-tuffs along its throat. Sailors say that the sleek carnivore will leap from the water and snatch unwary crew right off of the deck. Worse, if one feels especially onrey it'll tear apart smaller vessels with startling ease and shred those aboard into chum. Lake Cephalon

A teardrop-shaped arthropod, the cephalon inhabits freshwater lakes and primarily feeds off of fish and smaller mammals. However, they have been known to attack larger creatures and even humanoids if the chance arises. The typical lake cephalon is off-white in color with dingy, brown patches depending on the water quality of their habitat. Their segmented shell is festooned with barbed spikes to deter other predators. The creature can roll up into ball, covering its softer flesh with the armored plates to ward off lethal attacks. Squall Panther

The forelimbs of this jet-black cat also sport bat-like wings that attach to the creature's flanks. Despite the extra flesh, the squall panther is still a graceful and swift predator. Distressingly, it is deadly quiet while in flight. The gusts produced by its wings are concentrated enough to know prey off of its feet and even extinguish unprotected light sources. Giant Beaver

Measuring six feet in length when including its wide, flat tail, the giant beaver is normally a docile creature. Like its smaller cousins the beaver prefers to be left alone, but the dams it builds along the resulting lumber depletion often causes problems for downstream communities. This, along with its rich fur, makes the giant beaver a tempting target for unscrupulous hunters. However, poachers then have to figure out how to deal with its bite as dangerous any great sword and its tail as strong as a flail. Bloodmaw

Sleek and powerful, the bloodmaw blends the agility of great cat with the strength of a bear into one terrifying beast. The majority of the creature is a covered in a tawny fur, but that of its muzzle and throat are a vibrant red. This, of course, lends the species its name... in part. The bloodmaw also enjoys a secondary, smaller jaw within its throat not unlike that of a moray eel. When killing a prey animal, this secondary jaw tightly grips the victim and bleeds it out quickly. Gossamurder

Most butterflies drink flower nectar to survive but resort to sucking the putrid juices of a corpse instead of starving. Not so with the gossamurder. The dog-sized insect eschews ambrosia all together in favor of rancid blood. Its dappled wings are dotted with purple splotches, antenna adorned with barbs. Most would say its body resembles a spider more than a butterfly. Ill Omen. Soldiers consider a sighting of a gossamurder feeding on a corpse a forewarning of tragedy. They will often simply refuse to fight until the insect is caught and burned to ash. If the gossamurder gets away it is not unheard of for a commander to retreat to a different position entirely rather than ruin the morale of his troops.
