Arcane Mimic

This species of mimic seeks to not only feast on flesh, but magic as well. In this pursuit, they first adopted the guise of a magic wand. However, to be attractive to spellcasters, the arcane mimics had to properly bait the trap. As such, they focused on their caustic nature, developing not only potent acid, but augmenting the power of spells cast through them - especially those of the matching element. They learned that spellcasters were even willing to invest a bit of their lifeforce in pursuit of power, and drain their victims of vitality before eventually striking. Corona Mimic

Envious of the stars, the corona mimic chooses the form of an opulent light fixture in a vain attempt to capture even a mote of their glory. However, the monstrosity can never reach the beauty of heavenly objects, but that doesn’t stop it from trying. This unattainable goal has also seeded a deep hatred in the mimic’s amorphous heart, and it draws off of this unabating bitterness to blanket the area around it in biting, burning light. Channeling Mimic

Even monstrosities can have near-death experiences. Such an occurrence happened to the first channeling mimic as it was left for dead by an adventuring party beset shortly after their fight by a swell of shadows. The mimic managed to pull itself back from the brink, but came back… different. It found one pseudopod in the grave and using its connection to death took on the form of a spirit board. Besides strengthening its tethers to the shadowed realms, the disguise means prey willingly touch it, and often do what it tells them to do. Like their ancestors, all channeling mimics find that fear makes the meat taste better. Portal Mimic

From a strain of mimics bent on imitating quirky dungeon features, the portal mimic lays in wait as a ‘secret door’ waiting to be found. It discovered over time that prey loves the poke around when they see even one stone out of place. While this gets the first catch in, its fellows tend to batter the mimic to get them free. To that end, the portal mimic developed the ability to general a faux-treasure-laden pocket dimension on the other side of its opening. In truth, this is a mystical extension of the monstrosity’s stomach, and the portal mimic is a glutton. Mimic of Wondrous Power

Long did this particular monstrosity yearn to take on an animal shape. While most mimics were content being chests and barrels, doors and beds, this mimic wanted to feel what it was like to have beak and claw, scale and feather. Then, one day, it devoured an adventurer carrying an assortment of curious curious - objects that could turn into magical beasts! The mimic digested the items with a great deal of effort and gained the ability to take on the animalistic shapes it desired, to some extent anyway. Gargouille Mimic

This mimic founds immediate kinship with a similar ambush predator which came to populate the same dungeon it did; the gargoyle. It came to respect the elemental’s style of laying in wait, but more over its statuesque form. They do say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, after all. It wasn’t long before the gargouille mimic took on a similar shape. The gargoyle taught its companion the ends and outs of being a winged horror, on which the gargouille improved. Its descendants still plague dungeons and crooked spires to this day.
