Nephurzaluz, the Hand of the Cosmos

Towering at thirty-five feet tall, the red-skinned hand is dotted with mismatched eyes ranging from five to ten feet around. The largest of these organs gazes from the tip of each of its six fingers. Some of the eyes appear to be from various humanoids, others from a myriad of beasts, and the last from hitherto unknown species. Before the horror's palm sizzles a fiery sigil of a slit-eye surrounded by mind-bending runes. The symbol blinks, moves, and tracks targets as an actual eye would. Lashing, blue tendrils as long as a man dangle from Nephurzaluz's wrist hiding the entity's hidden, human-sized mouths beneath. Ruination's Herald. The severed hand a god that never was, Nephurzaluz seeks to re-sculpt reality by first plunging it back into the primordial chaos from which it came. Once, the cosmic horror was a sentient golem of wax, bone, and steel. It still retains an iota of the Relict's personality and intends to shape a world that truly loves and adores it as...

Sym'bluhns

A tick buried into the skin of reality, Sym'bluhns superficially resembles a giant, bloodsucking insect. Scabrous flesh covers the sides of its bloated, purple abdomen of gelatinous goo and quivering hairs as tall as a halfling. Sym'bluhns’ axe-like head always bears eight porcelain masks arranged five and three on the two halves of the head. These masks are ever-changing based on the thing’s needs or when it ‘gifts’ one to a creature. A pair of claws hang from its body, similar to lobster’s weapons but also made from leathery meat. When hungry, a sinuous tendril with a tooth-lined gullet slithers from its center mass and plunges into its prey. Sym'bluhns’ feeds on both living things' liquids and their sanity. It appears to only want to eat most of the time but clearly has other inscrutable plans for the real world. The masks it produces can be fused with other creature’s faces, dominating their will to serve the aberration’s needs. Sometimes this is to simply bring ...

The Praying Lord

The forest folk say the Praying Lord lived under the dark, thick canopy before even the gods came to be. They also say it will continue long after the last divine spark has burnt out. To venerate this primordial beast is to be granted bliss, to spurn its brutal love is to invite madness and death. Rarely glimpsed, even by its devout, the Praying Lord may be a massive insect. Shaped like three layered leaves, its abdomen changes hue with the season and sports four spindly, spined legs. The lord's thin thorax would better suit a man and is leathery instead of chitinous. A pair of long limbs with scything forearms sprout from its midsection. From its shoulders, a squirm of fleshy tendrils hangs. The thing's head can best be described as a ring of eyes about a severed neck, and its mouth is little more than a bloodless gash in the 'stomach' region of its thorax. The Praying Lord wants nothing more than to be fed and adored. Well, and the utter obedience of its followers. ...

Voidcaller

Spat from a dead, but a hungry star, voidcallers begin life as a nebulous black cloud feeding on the ambient misery all sentient things produce. Those that survive this larval stage develop a physical body over time, but can always revert back to their primordial state. The uninformed mistake voidcallers for some manner of undead, which is not surprising given their vampiric nature nor their bat-like humanoid appearance.Long, thick horns curl from the sides of their angular heads with upturned noises and a jaw that unhinges all the way back to just below those horns. Instead of fangs, though, voidcallers sport a lamprey-like hole still capable of producing speech. Their leathery wings connect flanks to underarms, and their concave abdomen tapers off into a pair of gangly, but powerful tail of rubbery flesh. Most often, voidcallers are encountered wearing humanoid disguises. Feindish souls, they build and command nefarious organizations including cults, criminal enterprises, necromance...

Ocularia Witherer

From the shoulders down there is nothing remarkable about the average occularia compared to other humanoids. Their bodies would be mistaken for that of an elf’s, lithe and angular. One might be suspicious as to the origins of bumpy, bruised patches on their elbows and knees, Or maybe the fact that their fingers and toes are uniform in length. It is the occularia’s head which casts it as a different evolutionary path than other humanoids. Some even believe that these strange kin are actually aberrations. Given the nest of eye-stalks the occularia have instead of hair, their sharp teeth, and only skin where eyes would normally be in the face, this is not a difficult conclusion to come to. However, it is an inaccurate one. Despite their dark origins, the occularia are a humanoid race, capable of reproduction through normal means, though a great deal are still dreamed into being. Their origin point is the tortured nightmares of a floating, one-eyed terror kept perpetually sleeping by a ni...

Xallion

Equal parts horse and lobster, the xallion’s head consists of a ‘face’ full of feelers around a vertical slash for a mouth, boiled-white eyes, and crusty shell plates that run down its neck, along its back, and end where a tail of grasping tentacles begins. The rest of its powerful, quadrupedal body is covered with mucus-slicked hair. Its four legs appear sturdy, but their boneless nature becomes evident whenever the limbs warp and curl to move swiftly across unsteady terrain. In fact, it looks like the horror should topple when at full gallop, but it rarely does. Horror on the Hoof. Cultivated by the Gloomriders , xallions used to run free somewhere deep in the far realms. They are not vicious by nature, despite being carnivores, and once bonded to a creature are unsettlingly affectionate. Occasionally a feral herd will find their way to the material plane, where they blend in with the local wild horse population. It’s not long before they find their way into the hearts and minds...

Gloomrider

The gloomrider wears a battered, black duster that bears a moist sheen; the mucus coating the gunslinger’s chalky skin saturates the fabric and exudes a cloying scent, not unlike sweet tobacco. Its ‘fingers’, a squirm of four tendrils, anxiously twitch a mere breath away from the butt of twin revolvers in slaad-skin holsters. These strange shooting irons bear cylinders of scintillating crystals and spit chunks of chaos-spawned stone. The drifter’s face consists of a single orifice that serves as the mouth, nose, and sensory organ. More small tendrils spiral from the opening, petrified back in the general shape of a head. Thankfully, the gloomstalkers wide-brimmed hat usually obscures the unsettling visage. The rest of the uninvited horror’s attire matches its profession with a fancy vest covered with deep-speech sigils, black trousers, naga-hide boots, and spurs crafted from dead stars. The last accessory makes their every step jangle with soul-jarring tones not born of this sphere. ...

Heart-Shaped Mimic

This mimic species knows there is nothing more intoxicating than love, and there is no easier prey to take down than those under the influence, as it were. To that end, it copies a tempting box of sweets embellished with ribbons with the silhouette of a heart. This heart-shaped mimic has also developed the ability to charm its foes through psionic wavelengths. Sometimes it uses this to lure a meal in close for one a good chomp. When hunting more dangerous prey, it will trick a charmed creature into picking it up and convince it to defend the mimic with its life. Ballistic Mimic

Perhaps one of the oddest mimic breeds, the ballistic mimic loves the crash and thunder of combat almost as much as it loves eating. Its digestive system, as elusive and strange as any other shapeshifting aberration, produces a particularly volatile acid which ignites when exposed to oxygen if expelled at a high enough speed. This allows the mimic not only to imitate a siege weapon more effectively, but also cooks its prey, which it prefers. Most often, the ballistic mimic takes on the shape of a cannon with a great roaring mouth ‘cast’ at the end its barrel and baroque wheels. In areas where such items are unheard of, it will pretend to be a self-lighting ballista instead. To deal with multiple enemies, or wily ones, this mimic sports a most disgusting ability, that of generating and spitting a spread of polyps that explode into a tar-like mass on impact. It is not unheard of for pirate crews to cultivate ballistic mimics, feeding them prisoners taken in exchange for firepower. ...

Mimic of Chance

Luck is a fickle, fluid thing, and that's what these tiny mimics love about it most. Taking the shape of dice, cards, and other gambling sets, these unique aberrations can disperse their bodies into a collection of similar objects. It’s not unheard of for a mimic of chance to shuffle itself into another gambling set, carefully consuming the articles it imitates. GIven its size, the mimic of chance prefers easy meals. It uses its alien mind to influence those playing its game, as it were, to take reckless actions such as cheating or betting more than they should until violence or self-harm occurs. Then it gobbles up the results. From time to time, however, a mimic of chance will bind with a gambler, usually a sardonic corrupt soul. Its nature helps the player amass prestige and wealth, while the gambler ensures that the miniature mimic never goes hungry. Maritime Mimic

Listing on the waves, lurking in the fog, scaled into legend, phantom ships draw the curious and greedy like moths to a flame. In the case of a maritime mimic, the result is much the same; the inquisitive are consumed. This mammoth aberration slumbers in coastal shoals while digesting its meals and waiting for its spawning polyps to ripen. Once it grows hungry, or ready to release its young, the maritime mimic takes to the waves. Sometimes it demolishes actual ships that come near, other times it lays in wait while explorers come aboard to feed its myriad children. Most insidiously, it will stuff its hull with sunken loot, mixing in many of the mimic produced amid the plunder, so they can be carried off to fresh hunting grounds by the unsuspecting. The maritime mimic usually has as favored vessel it adopts the visage of, but the most wily of this breed updates its hull through the ages. Rug Mimic

Most prey ignores the ground they walk on as they anxiously eye every chest, doorway, and window around them. The rug mimic evolved to take advantage of this. A long, flat creature most of the time, this aberration delights in creating complex patterns in its false weave. It will even let potential meals walk all over it, sometimes back and forth for days before striking. One odd quirk, however, about this mimic breed is they are easily riled when someone wipes their feet off on them. More often this will cause them to strike, even at inopportune moments. Porcelain Mimic

Let’s face it, old dolls are pretty creepy. They are also something often found in abandoned, loot-filled houses. These mimics realize that and have specialized their appearance to match this niche. However, something unexpected happened. Now and again, these horrors are scooped up by precious children who treat them as a precious toy, babying and talking to them constantly. This constant stimulus added just enough of a spark of intelligence to the aberrations that they learned to speak the common tongue, though often at the level of a human child. While this is a boon to be sure, even more pleasantly, their caretakers often set up tea parties for them! What mimic does like being fed with little effort? Sure. Small pets and neighborhood bullies might go missing, but that’s a small price to pay for companionship.
