Henpeck Hag Encounter

Wearing a cloak of chicken feathers and with the legs to match, the henpeck hag is a crooked, petty soul. Her sharp nose is too small for wizened features, her unkept hair rises in a knotted mess tangled with fingerbones. Some would say that the hag has an hourglass figure, but it is anything but becoming. In truth, her bust and hips are more bloated and swelled than anything else. The hide dress she wears is still covered with patches of hair, the seams held together by uneven stitching. Lastly, the fey's arms are longer than they should be, her gnarled hands falling just below knobby knees.

Innate Spellcasting.

The hag is a 14th level spellcaster with a spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 15, +7 spell attack modifier). The fey can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:

At Will: Cause Fear, Dissonate Whispers, Vicious Mockery, Witch Bolt

3/day: Bestow Curse, Shatter, Silence

Actions

Claw.

Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8+3) slashing damage.

Pecking Order (Recharge 6).

The henpeck hag targets a creature it can see within 60ft and attempts to warp its form. The creature must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom save or be transformed into a chicken for the next minute. This has no effect on a shapechanger or a creature with 0 hit points. The hag may use Bestow Curse on a creature it has turned into a chicken and if the creature fails the save this effect's duration becomes 24 hours. The effect ends if the creature drops to 0 hit points or dies, or if the henpeck hag dies. However, the enchanted cooking tools (see below) allow a henpecked hag to kill a creature polymorphed into a chicken and have it remain a chicken.

The creature's statistics, including mental ability scores, become that of a chicken. It retains its alignment and personality. It assumes the hit points of a chicken. When it reverts to its normal form, the creature returns to the number of hit points it had before it transformed. If it reverts as a result of dropping to 0 hit points, any excess damage carries over to its normal form. As long as the excess damage doesn’t reduce the creature’s normal form to 0 hit points, it isn’t knocked unconscious.

Reactions

Nag.

Whenever a creature fails an attack roll or skill check within 30ft of the henpeck hag and the fey is not incapacitated it may cast Vicious Mockery against that creature. If the creature fails its save against this spell the henpecked hag gains 7(2d6) temporary hit points.

The Red Pear Tree.

The encounter below is written as the tenth floor of a dungeon within a towering, direfly infested tree bearing vile, red fruit the size of boulders. This is written as a Waning Princes scenario. This is written as a hard to dangerous encounter for level 10-11 player characters.

Encounter

Three henpeck hags occupy this level of the dungeon. Their grimy hearths are heated from the level below, which can be reached by a tight, blind staircase in the middle of the room. Three cauldrons hang within the flagstone alcoves, each bubbling with foul stews. Masoned stone covers the wall and floor of the room in case a fire breaks out. These hags keep the rest of the fey within the Red Pear Tree fed, and as such are almost always toiling away. However, the conditions are less than sanitary with chickens freely roaming about, as well as the occasional goat, pig or other whatever stolen livestock is awaiting slaughter. The floor is matted with animal waste, food scraps and matted hay. From the ceiling a baffling array of pots, pans and cutlery hangs; each corroded and unclean. A wench-powered lift big enough for two medium humanoids sits on west-side of the room and leads to the level above.

Lair Actions.

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the assembled henpeck hags take a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the action taken depends on the number of henpeck hags remaining.

3 to 4 Henpeck Hags Remain - Flock. Each henpeck hag by focus a stampede of enchanted chickens in a 15ft long, 5ft long wide line. Each creature in the area of effect must succeed on a DC 15 Strength save or take 18 (4d8) slashing damage and be knocked Prone. On success, a creature takes half as much damage and is not knocked prone. Henpeck hags are immune to flock.

2 Henpeck Hags Remain - Cock Crow. Each henpeck hag may assail a creature they can see within 30ft with a litany of admonishments and curses. The creature must succeed on DC 15 Wisdom save or be stunned until the start of their next turn.

1 Henpeck Hag - Stews On! The henpeck hag animates one of the cauldrons in the room which flies toward a creature the henpeck hag can see within the room. The creature must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity save or take 18 (4d8) bludgeoning damage and be knocked Prone. On success the creature takes half as much damage and is not knocked prone.

If the creature is knocked prone, however, the cauldron upends and dumps its contents on the creature. It must then succeed on a DC 15 Constitution save or take 20 (6d6) fire damage, or half as much on a successful save.

Treasure:

The henpeck hangs have a set of enchanted cooking tools that provides advantage on skill check employing them. In addition, there may be humanoids polymorphed into chickens on this floor that the heroes are searching for or provide future plot hooks.

Knave of Knights

Bound to the Cavalcade of the King of Fools , this fallen angels wears a mockup of platemail armor crafted from bright pressed velvet and knitted wool but his weapons are nevertheless quite real. Said weapons are a whip crafted from liars's tongues and a lance of hell iron he wields as if it was made from driftwood. The stub of burnt wings jut from his back with multi-colored streamers dangling from the charred bones. The Knave of Knights fell in with the Cavalcade when he vowed to defend a rightful king's right to rule, only to find out that the sire he fell in with was a bastard usurper who had successfully taken his brother's place. Cursed and broken mentally by the deception, he was easily felled by the King of Fools and given a new place at the archdevil's side serving as his jester and favored knight all wrapped into one. The Black Lady

The Black Lady claims to be the The King of Fools' concubine and takes pride in the title despite how other devils look down on her and the rest of the cavalcade for it. She adores the 'silly' archdevil to no end and works tirelessly to ensure that the devils beneath him show the properly courtly respect that her lord is due... if he is around. Otherwise, she focuses more on vicious gossip, violent fetes, and malicious matchmaking. Pitch black in skin with burning red eyes, the Black Lady's legs end in smolding pig hooves while long, curled horns poke from her ebony coiffure. She wears a variety of overy fancy dresses that are always stripped, monochrome, and risque. One accessory she is never without is an enchanted fan made from burnt angel feathers. This fan is as sharp as any demon's claws and will always return to her hand. The Black Lady Medium Fiend (devil), lawful evil Armor Class 22 (natural armor) Hit Points...

Crackle

A singular being, Crackle is a bolt of lightning given sentience after hiting a monk meditating atop the mountain. In fact, it believes it is that very monk reincarbated from a smoldering husk instead of the force which killed it. Crackle takes on a humanoid shape, chaning its lighting to appear to have skin and clothing. However, ripples of electricity constantly wiggle along its form. Often times its hair, clothing, and arms will clip through one another for Crackle is an imperfect copy. Crackle travels about, driven by a strong sense of law if not justice. It has a hard time empathizing with other points of view than the one it adopted and flies into a rage when pressed on its true nature.
