Cultivated by a starving artist, the first canvas mimic quickly bolstered the painter's reputation. Able to rip off aspects from other popular artists, the mimicked paintings produced masterworks beyond the painter's skill. At the same time, the mimic was able to kill and rob first the painter's rivals, then their patrons, and finally the investigators. When the painter realized the heat was too real he bred the mimic and sold off its children, thus spreading the scourge across the region. Other artists have begun to use these monstrosities to make their lives easier. It's only a matter of time before the art form dies off entirely... or at least all the fine art collectors.
Social commentary is quite intended.

Shapechanger.
The mimic can use its action to polymorph into a painting or back into its true, amorphous form. Its statistics are the same in each form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn't transformed. It reverts to its true form if it dies.
Adhesive (Object Form Only).
The mimic adheres to anything that touches it. A Huge or smaller creature adhered to the mimic is also grappled by it (escape DC 15). Ability checks made to escape this grapple have disadvantage.
False Appearance (Object Form Only).
While the mimic remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from an ordinary painting.
Grappler.
The mimic has advantage on attack rolls against any creature grappled by it.
Innate Spellcasting (1/Day).
The mimic can innately cast Hypnotic Pattern (spell save DC 13), requiring no material components. Its innate spellcasting ability is Charisma.
Outside the Lines.
The mimic can mystically make a pseudopod attack through any painting within 30ft. If the attack hits and the creature is grappled, it magically appears within 5ft of the mimic and remains grappled.
Worth a Thousand Words. (Object Form Only).
The mimic can magically communicate simple ideas and emotions telepathically with any creature within 30 ft. of it. Any effect attempting to alter such a creature's emotional state, such as Fear or Calm Emotion, increases its DC by 2 while the creature remains within 30ft of the mimic as long as it matches the emotion the mimic is conveying.
Actions
Multiattack.
The mimic makes two pseudopod attacks.
Pseudopod.
Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) bludgeoning damage. If the mimic is in object form, the target is subjected to its Adhesive trait.
Bite.
Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) acid damage.
